Changing address in Switzerland

Moving involves several separate notifications. Registering an address with your municipality, forwarding your mail and notifying service providers are different tasks. This checklist helps you choose the appropriate channels.

1. Notify your municipality

   Check with your previous and new municipality which registration steps, deadlines and documents apply. Check eUmzugCH to see whether you can complete the procedure online.

2. Arrange mail delivery

   Check with Swiss Post whether you need mail forwarding. Forwarding redirects letters; it does not automatically update your customer records with every service provider.

3. List your service providers

   List your banks, insurers, health insurer, telecom providers, employer, subscriptions and other contacts. Note customer numbers and the date your new address takes effect.

4. Check the channel for each recipient

   Use the company’s customer portal or an available combined notification service. Swiss Post offers free change-of-address notifications to selected participating companies. Check whether your specific recipient is supported.

5. Check confirmations

   Keep confirmations and check that important service providers have updated your address. Sending a notification alone does not confirm that the recipient’s system has been updated.
